Hindmarsh Shire Council - Council Facilities
Hindmarsh Shire Council
Council Facilities

Council owns or manages a great number of public facilities. These include the Shire offices, community halls, some recreation reserves, public parks, swimming pools, senior citizens centres, libraries and kindergartens.

Shire Offices
Council offices are located in each of the four townships. This stems from the time before amalgamation of the former Shire of Dimboola and Lowan to form the Shire of Hindmarsh. The Shire of Dimboola's main offices were located at the beautiful Jeparit Mermorial Hall, the Old Dimboola Shire Hall in Dimboola (also housing the library) and the Rainbow Mecca and continue to be used by the Hindmarsh Shire Council.

The main Council offices are located 92 Nelson Street in Nhill.

The old Lowan Shire Hall in Nhill now houses the Nhill and District Historical Society.

Community Halls
Many of the public halls in the smaller communities are owned by Council but run by a local committee of management. Council works in partnership with these groups to maintain the facilities. The halls can be used by the general public for a small venue hire fee and are often used on a regular basis for all sorts of social gatherings, old time dances, anniversary celebrations and the like.

Recreation Reserves
Hindmarsh Shire has four recreation reserves, Davis Park in Nhill, Rainbow Recreation Reserve, Sir Robert Menzies Park in Jeparit and Dimboola Recreation Reserve. While Dimboola's recreation reserve provides facilities to 13 user groups, including all major sporting activities as well as rowing, Davis Park is home to football, netball, hockey and cricket. Like Dimboola, Jeparit's recreation reserve is located in the immediate vicinity of the Wimmera River and offers associated water sports opportunities. Rainbow has just relocated their tennis facilities to the recreation reserve and is anticipating a complete redevelopment of the facilities.

Public Parks
Jaypex and Goldsworthy Park in Nhill and the central Federal St gardens in Rainbow are green oases offering a pleasant place to rest and BBQ facilities.

Restrooms are located in close proximity to all parks.

Swimming Pools
All of the Shire towns boast their own swimming pools. While all of these facilities are owned by Council, Rainbow Pool is run by a committee of management, Dimboola and Nhill are run by local residents and Jeparit is operated by the YMCA.

For further information go to swimming pools.

Senior Citizens
While all of the four Shire towns have Senior Citizens facilities only the ones in Dimboola, Jeparit and Nhill are owned by Council but managed by their users, whereas Rainbow is sharing their facilities with the local RSL branch.

The venues are available for hire by members of the public and other community groups.

Kindergartens
Kindergartens operate in each of the four major towns. Wimmera Uniting Care provides children's services from Council owned premises in Clarence Street, Nhill, Hindmarsh Street, Dimboola, Darts Ave, Rainbow and Hindmarsh Street, Jeparit.

For further information on the services provided please contact Wimmera Uniting Care on 03 5382 6789.

Libraries
Council owns the library premises in Dimboola and Nhill and leases them to the Wimmera Regional Library Corporation.

Further information can be found under library services.
