People visiting the Dimboola Recreation Reserve or walking along the banks of the Wimmera River in the Reserve may have noticed a few additions in recent times.
Members of the Dimboola Town Committee and representatives of the Dimboola Rowing Club have completed the installation of a series of outdoor gymnasium and fitness equipment stations along the walking path beside the Wimmera River. The project known as Dimboola Wimmera River Fitness Trail has been undertaken by the Dimboola Town Committee with assistance from Hindmarsh Shire and funded through the Victorian Government’s Community Facility Funding Program – Minor Facilities.
The fitness trail consists of four stations starting near Wimmera Street and finishing near the green water tanks adjacent to the picnic tables and BBQ. Each fitness station has one outdoor gymnasium workout station and either one or two pieces of fitness equipment. The outdoor gymnasium equipment is fitted with signage providing instructions for correct use.
President of the Dimboola Town Committee, Mr Phil Colquhoun, said, "Members of the town committee have spent a few weekends assembling the equipment and marking out the sites where the stations were to be installed. We are very appreciative of the assistance provided by members of the Dimboola Rowing Club during installation and we would also like to thank the A&P Society for use of their pavilion to store the equipment during assembly". Mr Colquhoun added, "Although the equipment is now installed there is still work to be done to improve the pathways and beautify the fitness station areas".
Hindmarsh Shire Mayor, Cr Cliff Unger, said "The installation of the outdoor fitness stations complements the nearby Nine Creeks Walking and Bicycle Tracks and with a further pathway planned to link these two sites there will be approximately 5km of pathways through natural reserves for residents and visitors to walk or ride on. These projects will assist in improving the health of locals and provide another attraction to encourage visitors to Dimboola". Cr Unger added "This project reinforces the message that Hugh Delahunty, Minister for Sport and Recreation often states – more people, more active, more often".
