Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council 2026 Nominations Open
Published on 15 September 2025
Hindmarsh Shire Council is thrilled to announce that applications are now open for the 2026 Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council.
If you’re a young person between the ages of 12 and 18 who lives, works or attends school in Hindmarsh Shire, this is an excellent opportunity to support your friends and community, develop your leadership and teamwork skills and make a positive change.
What is Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council and what do they do?
Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council was established in May 2015 and has 12 members, plus the recipient of Hindmarsh Shire Council’s Youth of the Year Award.
The Youth Council meets monthly to organise and deliver activities, outdoor movie screenings, pool parties, live music events and hands-on training opportunities. They also work on community initiatives like the school holiday programs, mental health awareness campaigns, and public murals. Through the Youth Council, young people are seen, heard, and have a voice in decisions that impact them.
Stanley, a 2025 Hindmarsh Shire Youth Councillor, said “I have learnt the importance of the voice young people have to help make decisions for their community.”
Lisa, another current Youth Councillor, said, “The best part about Youth Council is being able to make new connections with other young people and being able to make something happen in our towns – which makes living in a small town better.”
Applications for the 2026 Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council close at 11:59pm on Sunday 23 November 2025. Applicants will undertake an interview process before being endorsed at the December 2025 Council meeting. Successful applicants will be presented with their certificates and badges in early 2026 with the annual Youth Council Leadership Retreat taking place shortly after.
Application forms can be downloaded from Council’s website at www.hindmarsh.vic.gov.au/apply-for-youth-council, or you can collect a hardcopy at any of our Customer Service Centres and Libraries.
The Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council is currently supported by funding from Hindmarsh Shire Council and the State Government’s Amplify and Engage! programs - this funding support allows Hindmarsh Shire Council to plan and implement activities and training relevant to young people in Hindmarsh.
