Jeparit is a quaint rural town on the border of the Southern Mallee and Wimmera regions with a predominant broadacre farming sector. Famously, the town is the birthplace of Sir Robert Menzies, Australia's longest serving Prime Minister. The Wimmera River winds its way through town, making Jeparit a great place to reconnect with nature along walking trails or by kayaking. For history buffs, the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum provides hours of enjoyment and discovery revealing the agricultural heritage of the town and local area.

ACCOMMODATION

Jeparit is a RV Friendly town that offers a variety of accommodation options ideal for both overnight visits and longer stays. The Riverview Holiday Park is a great family friendly caravan park on the edge of the Wimmera River. It offers cabin accommodation along with powered and non-powered sites. The park is adjacent to the Jeparit Riverbank Precinct which has a BBQ shelter, river viewing platform and playground, as well as a close by boat ramp and fishing pontoon. For nature lovers and campers, Lake Hindmarsh offers numerous camping areas ranging from Four Mile Beach Campground with unpowered campsites, toilet and shower amenities, to basic bush camping sites. Visit Wimmera River and Lake Hindmarsh (Gurru)

Lake Hindmarsh (Gurru), when full, is the largest natural freshwater lake in Victoria. In drier times a visit to the lake is still a rewarding, surreal experience not to be missed. Even when dry, the immense expanse of the lake bed will leave you standing in awe. The lake is a mecca for birdwatchers with its variety of surrounding ecosystems, from cleared agricultural land through to eucalypt woodlands, grasslands, riverine and lakebeds, the area attracts over 250 bird species. Camping is available at Four Mile Beach and Schultzes Beach, along with more basic bush camping at Williamsons Beach, the Wattles and Picnic Bend. For a stunning sunset view across the lake head to Picnic Bend, a short drive out of Jeparit along Lake Road.

Visit the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum

Come and discover one of Australia's largest collections of pioneering history at the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum. Nestled on the banks of the picturesque Wimmera River in Jeparit, the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum is home to a huge range of historical collections including agricultural machinery, horse drawn vehicles, original pioneer homesteads, as well as a church, hall, blacksmith shop, chemist, state school, and gaol. Explore the early days of Australian agriculture and experience life in the Wimmera Mallee as it was in the early 1900s.

Visit Menzies Square

visit to Jeparit will not be complete without spending some time at Menzies Square. This attractive park in the centre of town celebrates the life of Sir Robert and tells the story of how a shop owner’s son from a small rural community went on to shape Australian politics into the modern era. Scan QR codes to hear samples of Menzies' iconic speeches and view some of his home movies. A perfect spot to relax and enjoy a barbeque while the kids enjoy some time in the play space.

Go for a Walk or Bike Ride

Take a fantastic self-guided walk along the Jeparit Heritage Walk (scan QR Codes along the way to find out more information on historic sites). This walk gives a great introduction to the history of Jeparit.

Stretching from the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum to the Nhill-Jeparit Rd bridge, the Edward John Eyre Heritage River Walk is a fantastic way to explore the riverine environment with plenty of birdlife and wildlife along the way. Heading off the eastern end of the Edward John Eyre Heritage River Walk, continue along the Wimmera River Discovery Trail, a walking and mountain biking trail following the river 52km south to Dimboola. The trail can be completed in five sections with easy vehicle access at the end of each section. For those wishing to tackle the entire walk in one visit there is a free campsite at Antwerp which is the half-way point.

Arts and Culture

Sitting on Wotjobaluk Country, the local area contains significant cultural heritage sites. Barringgi Gadyin (Wimmera River) flows through the town on its way to Gurru (Lake Hindmarsh) providing a life blood of resources, creation stories, cultural sites and trading routes for the First Nations People. Following in the footsteps of explorer Edward John Eyre, European pastoralists began grazing sheep and established broad-acre agriculture in the area leading to the farming culture that established Jeparit and is still evident today.

Jeparit is half-way between Arkona Silo Art and Rainbow/Albacutya Silo art sites, making it the perfect spot to begin exploring the Silo Art Trail.
