Cat Cage Hire

Council has a number of cat cages which members of the community can hire to capture nuisance or feral cats on their property. All persons wishing to hire a cat trap are required to complete and sign the Cat Cage Service Hire Agreement, pay the weekly hire fee and leave a cash bond ($52.80, to be kept at the Customer Service office of the relevant town) in advance of receiving the trap.

Traps hired will be delivered by a Local Laws Officer on a Monday and will be collected on a Friday; if a request to hire a trap is received midweek, a trap will be delivered the following Monday.

When a cat is trapped, it will be collected by a Local Laws Officer; collections will be conducted between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday by arrangement. Please note that collection will not occur over a weekend/public holiday.

Upon completion of the hire period, and once the trap is confirmed to be in good order, the Local Laws Officer will advise both the customer and the relevant Customer Service office that the bond is able to be returned/collected.

If an animal is caught in a customer’s personal trap, it is required to be transferred, by the customer, to a Council owned trap. This will be arranged by appointment only and it is preferable that this takes place at the customer's home.

Please note that at times traps may be unavailable and a waiting list may occur.

For information regarding nuisance native animals, please contact the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

The sale and use of animal traps is regulated under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (POCTA) Act 1986 and POCTA Regulations 2019. For more information visit Animal Welfare Victoria.
