Reading the Landscape After Fire: Little Desert

Project Platypus invites you to their Fire Recovery Workshop - Reading the Landscape after Fire: Little Desert.

This workshop will explore how fire has reshaped the Little Desert landscape and what that means for the biodiversity that they're working to protect.

Using a covenanted property in Lawloit as a living case study, they will bring together ecological expertise and on-ground observation to help you "read" what fire leaves behind, and understand what recovery looks like.

In this workshop you will hear from:

• Mirinda Thorpe lives, works, and volunteers in the Wimmera. Her job and passion is environmental conservation and restoration, undertaking work such as revegetation, weed control, native seed collection and threatened species monitoring and management. Her parents own a Trust for Nature covenanted property on the boundary of the Little Desert National Park, which was impacted by the 2025 Little Desert fire. Mirinda will share their experiences, management and observations of the privately owned conservation reserve, named 'Banksia Springs', including fire recovery and species responses.
  
  
• Jess Sambell is an Edenhope local with a keen interest in the natural environment, particularly the native terrestrial orchids of the Wimmera region. An untrained naturalist, keen observer of nature and amateur photographer, Jessica has spent many hours exploring local bushland, photographing and learning about the remarkable diversity of orchids found across the region. Her interest is driven by curiosity and a desire to better understand, appreciate and share the often-overlooked natural treasures growing in our local landscape.

Following the presentations, you'll head out to Horseshoe Bend Reserve, putting the morning's learning into practice as we walk the land and look for the signs discussed.
