Mayoral Matters October 2022

It is lovely to see the sun starting to shine after considerable rain fall this winter and spring. It has resulted in some amazing canola crops which are the tallest I can remember! I hope the rain translates into good profit for farmers, which flows into the Hindmarsh economy. Agricultural and a profitable year has so many impacts on our community. When the farmers have a great year, so does Hindmarsh.

The rain has significantly impacted a number of roads across the region and Hindmarsh is no exception. The Council’s infrastructure team are working hard to assess the damage caused by the high levels of rain and what roads require urgent maintenance. Some of the capital road upgrades may be paused for a period whilst the team prioritises any required maintenance, particularly for key freight routes for harvest.

If you are concerned about the state of your road, please contact the Council customer service team via email or phone so that the road can be reviewed.

This week is a highlight in Hindmarsh with our local agricultural shows being held in Rainbow, Nhill and Dimboola. The local show is such a wonderful time for friends, families and communities to come together and enjoy the wide showcase of attractions on display. Whether it is the sheep shearing competitions, machinery – vintage and brand new, scrumptious looking baked goods or the incredible sewing and craft work on display.

My favourite sections are the children’s arts and crafts which show the local talent coming through our schools and the photography competitions which display not only the talented photographers in the area, but capture many amazing moments in Hindmarsh.

Instead of a show in Jeparit this year, there will be a concert featuring the talented folk/country acoustic trio ‘Me N Me Mates’ at Menzies Square from 12.30pm – 2.30pm, with a free BBQ.

Nhill is hosting the Nhill Heritage weekend to follow on from the show, which is a jam packed weekend sharing the interesting heritage collections, buildings and displays across the town. Some of which are rarely seen.

I hope you can get out and about and enjoy the many fabulous events on a Hindmarsh at the moment and I wish all the farmers well as we head into the hay and then harvest season.
