Following on from the successful series of author talks and the book launch of Growing Up in Country Australia, Hindmarsh Shire Libraries are excited to announce the launch of their inaugural story competition – Growing up in Hindmarsh.

For those not familiar with the book Growing Up in Country Australia, it is a fresh, modern look at life in country Australia. There are stories of joy, adventure, nostalgia, connection to nature and freedom, but also of drought, fires, plagues, and isolation. Hindmarsh Shire Libraries are encouraging residents across the Shire, past or present, to share their own unique and revealing snapshot of rural life – their individual story of Growing up in Hindmarsh.

Community members are encouraged to send stories across a variety of mediums – pen and paper, oral tradition, through film, through art, or through craft. Your story of Growing up in Hindmarsh can be presented in any way that takes your fancy and tells your story. The competition is open to all age groups, from primary school and high school students, to open age categories. Judging will occur with a winner from each town selected. Winners prize packs include a copy of Growing up in Country Australia, edited by Rick Morton.

MA Plazzer, published author featuring in Growing up in Country Australia, has very kindly offered to assist with judging. Hindmarsh Shire Libraries will also be collating entries in all formats, and putting them together into an Anthology, for the community to see and share. This is a fantastic opportunity to get creative and tell your story.

It is time to get your thinking caps on and tell us your story of Growing up in Hindmarsh. The competition opens Friday 29 April and closes Friday 17 June 2022. Winners will be announced by the end of June.
