Hindmarsh Shire Council is excited to announce the showcasing of “The Rain Maker” play, an arts and health production for youth mental health care and youth suicide prevention.

Studies show that farming communities in Australia experience mental health problems at twice the rate of the general population. However, ‘rural stoicism’ and fear of stigma are common barriers to sufferers seeking appropriate mental health care. (Hoolahan 2002)

THE RAIN MAKER is designed to educate audiences around a range of issues relating to youth mental health care.  The play itself follows the life of Billy-the Rain Maker-Jackson who is a star footballer. He’s studying for his year 12 exams, managing a DJ business and seeing Lark. At home, life is not so easy. His stepfather is an abusive alcoholic and when his mother receives a cancer diagnosis, Billy is thrust into the role of father and carer. His life is suddenly not his own and his dreams of playing AFL vanish as he adjusts to his responsibilities.

There will be a matinee show commencing at 1:30pm, and an evening show commencing at 7:00pm.  Each performance will be followed by a Q&A facilitated by the actors and a mental health care provider.  We invite schools, organisations, and the community to attend this show with us, and believe it will be a great opportunity to continue to open up a space for community connectedness and tackle the stigma around mental illness.

Hindmarsh Shire Council’s Mayor, Cr Melanie Albrecht said “Mental health issues in youth are prevalent across Australia and Hindmarsh is no exception. It is important that we create a culture of support where people can share when they are struggling. I encourage people of all ages to attend the Rain Maker to further learn about this important issue.”
