The heritage listed Yurunga Homestead is now the home to an exciting new external mural thanks to an Australian Government Regional Arts Fund grant. The Quick Response grant was established to assist regional artists impacted by the COVID19 pandemic through public art implementations promoting the artist’s work and the local community.

Local Rainbow artist Belinda Eckermann was engaged to produce a mural telling the history of Yurunga Homestead. Belinda has previously been involved in a number of public art installations in Rainbow, including a mural at the butchers and a series on the local Ghost Moths.

Belinda explains “I designed the mural to tell the story of the two families who owned Yurunga and decided to represent it in sepia/black and white to fit with the times”. She continued, “Painting this mural was challenging due to the complexity involved in each image rather than the scale. There are 14 images, all of which are like a painting in their own right”.

Cr Melanie Albrecht, Mayor said “The scale of the mural is impressive and the colour choice evokes nostalgia. Belinda has painted a beautiful mural that is testament to the lives of these families. The mural captures many elements of a time gone by. It is an extraordinary work of art that the Hindmarsh community are very fortunate to be able to showcase.”

The mural is painted on three panels which has been attached to the side of a shipping container used for storage whilst restoration projects take place at the homestead. It is visible from outside the property when the homestead is closed, however best viewed in conjunction with a visit and tour of Yurunga. The mural offers an added attraction to the homestead and provides an extra activity outside when larger tour groups are split to maintain smaller numbers touring the inside of the property.

The mural also adds to the Rainbow Town Murals extending the Federal Street mural trail out to Yurunga.
