Hindmarsh Shire Council is proud to be participating in the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), which occurs annually on 17 May. IDAHOBIT celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally and raises awareness for the work that still needs to be done to combat discrimination.

In 2021, Council voted to fly the Rainbow flag on this date as a symbol of inclusion and solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2022, the Rainbow flag will be flown at Council’s offices in Nhill and Dimboola.

Together with Hindmarsh Shire Libraries, Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council are bringing Nevo Zisin (they/them), to present a virtual talk on self-love and how to be a good ally. Nevo is a queer, non-binary advocate, performer and award-winning author of Finding Nevo (2017) and the Pronoun Lowdown (2021). The virtual talk with Nevo will take place from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on Tuesday 17 May 2022. Community members will be able to come together to view the talk live from Dimboola Library, and it will also be live-streamed on Hindmarsh Shire Council’s Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Melanie Albrecht said, “Council is proud to stand together with the LGBTQIA+ community to show support by helping to educate community members on being an inclusive community and a good ally. Homophobia still exists in our communities and it significantly impacts people’s mental health, particularly young people. Hindmarsh Council has an important role to show leadership on this significant day.”
