Hindmarsh Shire Council is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2027 Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council.

The Youth Council is an advisory committee that represents and advocates for young people aged 12 to 18 years who live, work, study, or socialise within Hindmarsh Shire. It provides young people with the opportunity to have their voices heard, contribute ideas, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and make a positive impact in their community.

What is the Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council?

Established in 2015, the Youth Council consists of up to 17 members, including the recipient of Hindmarsh Shire Council’s Youth of the Year Award.

Youth Councillors meet monthly to plan and deliver a range of activities and initiatives for young people across the Shire. These include outdoor movie screenings, pool parties, live music events, training opportunities, school holiday programs, mental health and wellbeing initiatives, and public art projects.

Previous Youth Councillors have seen the impact of their contributions and gained valuable experience that strengthens their resumes and supports future applications for employment, university and volunteering opportunities.

Young people who are passionate about making a difference, building new skills and connecting with others are encouraged to apply. By joining the Youth Council, young people can help shape programs, events, and decisions that affect their community, ensuring the voices of local youth are seen, heard, and valued.

Matilda, a 2026 Hindmarsh Shire Youth Councillor, said “Being a Youth Councillor has given me the opportunity to meet new people, build my confidence, and make a difference in my community. It’s rewarding to see ideas come to life and know that they have a positive impact on other young people.”

“Youth Council has helped me develop skills, such as recognising and supporting a friend through completing Teen Mental Health First Aid training. It has also given me the confidence to MC events, speak in front of large groups, and share my thoughts and ideas with other youth councillors.” Matilda continued.

Applications for the 2027 Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council close at 11:59pm on Sunday 29 November 2026.

After applications close, applicants will be interviewed, with appointments endorsed at the December 2026 Council Meeting. Successful applicants will receive their certificates and badges in early 2027 before attending the annual Youth Council Leadership Retreat.

Application forms can be downloaded from Council’s website at www.hindmarsh.vic.gov.au/apply-for-youth-council, or you can collect a hardcopy at any of our Customer Service Centres and Libraries.

The Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council is supported through funding from Hindmarsh Shire Council and the Victorian Government’s Amplify and Engage! programs. This funding enables Youth Council to plan and deliver activities, events, and training opportunities that are relevant and beneficial to young people across Hindmarsh Shire.
