Children’s Week is a national celebration of children’s rights, as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).  Held every year in October, the week highlights the rights of children to learn, play, thrive and be heard.
Children’s Week celebrations in Hindmarsh Shire kicked off with a pop-up playgroup in Nhill, facilitated in collaboration with West Wimmera Health Service.  Despite a last-minute change of venue due to the wild weather, the group was well-attended.  The children enjoyed some sensory play, while their parents enjoyed the chance to sit down with a warm cup of tea and chat with other parents.
Celebrations continued over the next two days with two booked-out sessions at the Tiny Goats and Co farm, just outside of Dimboola.  Attendees had many activity options at the farm, including being able to feed the cows and alpacas, spend time in the tiny goat enclosure, cuddle baby chickens, play on the playground or complete a nature craft activity in the barn using materials from the farm like alpaca wool.  Despite the wide age range of attendees, there was something for everyone and many were having so much fun that they didn’t want to leave at the end of the session.
Hindmarsh Shire Council was privileged to receive a grant through the Victorian Government Department of Education’s 2025 Children’s Week Grants program.  This allowed Children’s Week activities to be delivered to families by Council’s Early Years team at no cost, enabling children to be celebrated and participate in activities within their local community.
