An important milestone has been reached for what will be the latest, and most exciting destination on the Silo Art Trail, with construction of the new tower and viewing platform at the Rainbow Silo Tourism Development now complete.

The 27-metre-high tower features a stairway and elevator that leads to a viewing platform adjacent to the top of the Silo, giving visitors panoramic views of the Mallee Plains. The platform also provides access to a balcony within the Silo itself, which will provide an opportunity to enjoy an innovative internal art activation, a first for the Silo Art Trail. A lower viewing platform also includes an internal balcony from which visitors will be able to view the art.

All that remains to be completed is the final element of this project, the installation of innovative internal art by Artist James Voller, Founder and Director of Collide Public Art Initiative. Fabrication of the acrylic panels is underway, with James aiming to be onsite in the second week of December to install his artwork. James enthused “We’ve really enjoyed developing the internal and external artworks for the Rainbow Silo project, it’s such a unique opportunity. Geoffrey Carran’s external mural looks fantastic and has already received lots of positive feedback. We think what is planned for the Silo interior will also be popular with visitors. We’re looking forward to being onsite soon!”

Reflecting on development, Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ron Ismay said “It is exciting to see the project reach this stage of development. Interest in the project to date has been amazing, with plenty of locals and tourists already driving past the Silo to take a sneak peek so I’m excited to see the level of interest once the Silo is officially open.”

Council will make further announcements regarding the opening date for the Silo soon.

This project has been made possible thanks to the Victorian Government’s Tourism Infrastructure Program – Flagship Projects and Hindmarsh Shire Council.
