Hindmarsh Shire Council is seeking community feedback as it considers adjusting the collection frequency of glass bins from every eight weeks to every twelve weeks. The proposed change aims to improve efficiency and the utilisation of the glass collection service, following a significant reduction in glass volumes due to the introduction of the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) in November 2023.
In April 2023, Council introduced a kerbside glass recycling service in response to the Victorian Government’s directive to implement a four-bin waste system. This initiative was supported by a grant to facilitate the rollout of the glass bin service. The recent audit of bin presentation rate suggested that only 1 in 5 households put their bin out on the collection day. This means that the glass collection truck is travelling entire route to collect only 20% of the total number of bins.
Despite the proposed adjustment, Hindmarsh Shire Council remains committed to maintaining the separation of glass from other recyclables and ensuring a dedicated glass collection service. Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor Cr. Ron Ismay said, “Given the low bin presentation rate, Council is now seeking feedback from the community about the future operation of the glass service in an effort to maximise the efficiency.”
Since the introduction of glass service, on average, over 7 tonnes of glass has been successfully diverted from landfill on every collection cycle. Council is encouraging residents to share their input regarding the proposed change in collection frequency.
