Hindmarsh Shire Council’s 2026 September/October School Holiday Program has come to an end, with approximately 430 young people from across the Shire and surrounding communities taking part in two weeks of fun-filled activities.

The free program offered diverse, hands-on experiences designed to encourage creativity, learning and social connection. During Michelle Danisch’s mosaic coaster workshop, participants designed and crafted their own personalised coasters. Young people also attended craft sessions where they created handmade items to enter in the Nhill, Dimboola, Jeparit and Rainbow agricultural shows.

The action-packed program included activities for young people of all ages. Participants laced up their skates for a Roller Disco with Pru, where they enjoyed skating to music. Indoor Soccer gave young people an opportunity to develop teamwork and sporting skills in a friendly and inclusive environment. Pilates with Kelly encouraged participants to stay active, improve their flexibility and learn about the benefits of movement and wellbeing. The Circus Workshop was another highlight, giving participants the chance to learn exciting circus skills such as juggling, balancing and plate spinning.

The program also included two popular cooking sessions, allowing participants to develop practical kitchen skills while creating tasty treats. During Natalia’s workshop, young people rolled up their sleeves to make delicious rum balls while learning about the science of food. Participants also joined Cat Clarke for a pizza-making session, where they prepared their own pizzas, explored different toppings and ingredients, and gained confidence in the kitchen while having fun with friends.

Two movie screenings were other highlights of the program. ‘Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass’ at the Nhill Memorial Community Centre was entertaining for all generations. ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ was shown on a giant inflatable screen in the Dimboola Stadium and provided families and friends with a wonderful opportunity to come together and enjoy a unique cinema experience.

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ron Ismay, said the program’s success reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting local young people and their families.

“The School Holiday Program has once again provided young people with valuable opportunities to stay active, learn new skills, make friends and participate in enjoyable activities within their local communities.”

The School Holiday Program was made possible through funding from the Victorian Government’s Engage and Amplify Programs. The funding enables Council to engage with and celebrate young people by providing opportunities to participate in and connect with their local community.
