Raised Level Crossing for Nhill’s Macpherson Street

Hindmarsh Shire Council has successfully secured funding to construct a raised pedestrian crossing - commonly known as a “Wombat Crossing” - at the intersection of Macpherson Street and McDonald Street in Nhill.
The $125,000 project is jointly funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) under its Local Government Grant Program and Hindmarsh Shire Council, on a 50:50 basis. TAC is contributing $62,861 toward the total project cost.
The works will include the construction of a raised pedestrian crossing on Macpherson Street, kerb outstands on both sides of the crossing, drainage improvements, footpath construction, solar lighting above the crossing, and associated line marking.
Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ron Ismay, welcomed the funding, stating, “This is a fantastic opportunity to improve the safety of our most vulnerable residents, particularly those accessing the nearby health service and aged care facility. This project will give residents greater confidence when crossing a busy road, while also reducing the risk and severity of potential collisions.”
The primary goal of the project is to provide a safe, priority crossing point for pedestrians - especially those traveling to and from the nursing home located to the north. The raised crossing will help reduce vehicle speeds at the intersection and eliminate the need for pedestrians to wait for safe traffic gaps.
Construction is expected to begin in the 2025/2026 financial year.
