At the council meeting held on Wednesday 18 June 2025, Hindmarsh Shire Council resolved to modify its kerbside glass collection service, transitioning from an 8-weekly to a 12-weekly schedule. This change aims to optimise the efficiency of the service, which current data indicates has significantly decreased following the introduction of the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).
A recent bin audit revealed that only 20% of purple glass bins are being presented for collection on scheduled nights. This low presentation rate suggests that the current 8-weekly frequency may be more often than many residents require.
To gather community feedback, Council opened a "Have Your Say" page from 3 May 2025 to 2 June 2025. The response strongly supported the proposed change, with over two-thirds of respondents indicating they do not put their purple glass bin out every eight weeks and believe a 12-weekly collection would provide sufficient capacity.
Mayor Ron Ismay says "We have listened to our community and reviewed the feedback data. It is clear that the service is not being utilised at its optimum level. This adjustment to a 12-weekly collection will ensure that we are using resources more efficiently while still providing a convenient and effective service for glass recycling."
The new 12-weekly collection schedule will take effect after the currently scheduled glass collection on 24 October 2025. The first collection under the new schedule will be 16 January 2026. Residents will be informed of their new collection dates through Hindmarsh communication channels and social media. A new fridge magnet with new collection dates will be delivered to residents after October 2025.
