The Jeparit Ensign Hindmarsh Chronicle was a large 4 page sheet printed at the Dimboola Banner Office, which merely changed its heading and inserted a few columns of Jeparit district news plus any Jeparit advertising.

The new journal was launched in September, 1893, with a mammoth issue of 1000 free copies, sufficient to cover the Wimmera to the Murray, considering the then sparse population of the Mallee settlement. A printing press was never installed, although they did build an office building at this location.

The editor/proprietor, J Oakley Browne proudly announced “we hoist the Ensign over the district and nail it to the mast of progress, we hope to see it wave long”.

Mr Walker, proprietor of the Banner, nominated against the sitting parliamentary representative for Lowan, so naturally the Ensign favoured all its election comment towards Walker while criticising the sitting member.
