Under the leadership of the first President and Secretary, Dr F. Gawne and E. E. Lock respectively, the Bowling Club opened on this site in Broadway on February 24th 1923. Membership subscription for the club at the time was £2.2.0 with a further 5 shillings required for the use of a locker. The first paid green keeper was a Mr Strange who was paid £3 per week on the understanding that members would assist him in his duties.

Controversies involving bowls with a dubious bias specification, along with reactions against “new fangled” electric lawn mowers made for a lively beginning for the club. The year 1938 was the first year that Lady Bowlers attempted to play with the club, a wish that was finally fulfilled in the 1953/54 season.

The original clubhouse consisted of just two small rooms so a number of additions were made, including a pavilion in 1939, to the club as well as a shed for the croquet players. A less than successful new green became locally famous and was known as “The Bull Ring”. After a number of false starts the club was finally able to relocate to its present site in Roy Street with new clubrooms opening in 1963.
