Site 73 Mother Cregans Pub

Dimboola - Rainbow Road

Return to walk homepage

On this site which is now occupied by the Jeparit Gun Club, stood the building known as Mother Cregan’s Pub. Sources suggest it was established by Thomas Cregan circa 1870, it was the 1st accommodation house and 2nd building to be built near Jeparit.

It is also not known whether the pub ever had a licence to sell alcohol, but stories of drunken brawls have been reported. Dimboola police frequently visited here after the establishment of the pub and its popularity grew amongst the many itinerant shearers and workers. One report was that 7 men were found drunk and bleeding from fighting and after considerable trouble were induced to leave.

It was also used as a wayside stop and changeover station for travellers and freight conveyors travelling to and from stations like Pine Plains, Albacutya and Wonga Lake to the north, taken up in the 1850s-60s by enterprising pastoralists.
